Wat brengt 2008?

Het nieuwe jaar is er en nu is het tijd om wat goede voornemens te formuleren. Ik ga niet zoals op een dozijn andere blogs een lijstje met ‘wat wil ik in 2008 bereiken’ maken maar heb maar direct de koe bij de horens gevat.

Wiigames.be, mijn blog die uitgroeide tot de meest bezochte website over de Wii in België is verkocht. De deal moet nog gesloten worden maar er is reeds een mondeling akkoord met 9Lives. Binnenkort eens naar de games afdeling van Telenet in Mechelen rijden met de nodige documenten en dan is de deal rond.

Stilaan beginnen we dan ook al aan een volgend, voorlopig geheim, project te denken en daar hoort de nodige planning bij. De eerste regels van het design document zijn reeds geschreven, het framework staat klaar om mee te beginnen ontwikkelen. Alleen het grafisch gedeelte moet nog bepaald worden maar dat is iets voor wanneer het design document klaar is.

En om alles vlot, correct en optimaal te laten verlopen heb ik maar wat geinvesteerd in een nieuwe PC die er binnekort aankomt, een fatsoenlijke IDE voor de ontwikkeling van het nieuwe project (Aptana Studio 1.0 Professional) en de volgende boeken:

Dat zal normaal wel genoeg leesvoer zijn voor de eerste 2 maanden van 2008.

Wiigames.be

A new blog started by me mainly to experiment some with various new techniques and web API’s. The site will be regulary updated though so if you are in game consoles and want to step right up with the next revolution in console gaming this is a site you want to bookmark. Oh yea … it’s dutch too so that’ll probably rule out you english speakers

The stuggle for work

Last year was the first year I worked as freelance webdesigner/developer, on my own, no boss, no arguments, no paycheck trouble, no strings attached. To my own surprise everything worked out very well, i’ve been able to attract a couple of customers and persuade a few of my former employers clients to have me continue work on their website (my employer went bankrupt so he can’t really care can he?). As starter I could also take advantage of a few business laws overhere in Belgium that makes it easier for young startups, I didn’t need to charge BTW (VAT) if i kept my turnover below 5500 euro’s and the paperwork is near to nothing. By the end of 2005 I finished several websites and I was confident 2006 would turn out equally great, if not better. But boy was this first month of 2006 a bugger …

It’s damn hard to get potential clients to call back, little work, little interest of former clients to rework or upgrade. But hey … today the struggle is over … I signed 2 new contracts (well the signing still has to be done but it’s a formality) and have 3 (!!!) others on the line … I think it’ll be hard to keep overhead below 5500 euro’s this year. Well i’m sure NOT gonna try to keep it below the threshold. Long live 2006!

Hosting deals?

I’m looking for a good hosting deal for some small to medium websites i’m developing. Anyone has some suggestions or needs some reffers? Just leave a comment.

Little update, minimum requirements are controlpanel with at least the same ease of use as Plesk which means: Crontabs, Databasemanager, Detailed DNS settings, mailsettings (autoreply, groups, …) and subdomains.

Welcome to my new Blog

Welcome to my new blog slash website slash portfolio. The main reason this website is here is because i wanted to get rid of the tedious task of constantly keeping two websites up to date. I just combined the two (Skyrocket.be and Blog.skyrocket.be) because basically they were about the same thing: Me making websites for a living or fun (even though thats the same thing for me).

The old blog is still available, in dutch though, at http://blog.skyrocket.be. I’ll be redesigning the theme there so it’s clear that the blog is now located here.

What should you expect from this blog? Well it’s hard to tell since i’m not a pro blogger so I probably won’t blog about just one thing, and one thing only. You can expect me to share some idea’s about how webdesign/development is evolving overhere in Belgium and around the world. I’ll share my thoughts on new websites and webprojects. As you probably figured out by now the biggest part of all blogposts here will be about webdesign and development, altough i won’t refrain from posting the every-day-life rants and raves too. I hope it’ll prove to be an interesting experience for all of you and i hope to see you now and then visiting my blog.
