Door deze overname krijgt oracle niet alleen Java (en NetBeans), maar ook Solaris, VirtualBox, Open Office én MySQL in handen. Als dat geen joekel van een investering is dan weet ik het niet. Dat heeft den Larry weer goed geregeld zou ik zo zeggen. Het is ook niet zo gek dat het bestuur van Oracle de overname unaniem heeft goedgekeurd.

Ik denk en hoop dat Microsoft zich stilaan serieus zorgen begint te maken. Google blijft hun steeds een stapje (met een zevenmijls laars) voor op het internet en op het niveau van besturingssystemen beginnen de verhoudingen ook steeds meer en meer te kantelen. Er zijn steeds meer mensen die overschakelen van Windows naar Mac of een ander OS zoals Linux.

Als we de productportfolio van Sun even bekijken dan zie je al direct 4 direct concurrerende producten van Microsoft;

• OpenSolaris vs WindowsServer
• Java vs .NET
• OpenOffice vs Microsoft Office
• VirtualBox (xVM) vs VirtualPC (VirtualServer)

En wat gaat er met Open Office gebeuren? Als Oracle zijn schouders onder het project zet wordt het eens te meer een zware concurrent van Microsoft Office, want laten we eerlijk zijn, waarvoor jij en ik office gebruiken hoef je geen €600 neer te tellen, hetzelfde bereiken we met sprekend gemak ook met Open Office. Het enige wat me dan misschiens nog een beetje tegenzit in Open Office is een compleet alternatief voor Outlook. Dat Oracle daar dan maar mee begint, dan hebben ze er al één klant bij … als ze met hun fikken van MySQL af blijven tenminste

Normaal zou ik een kerstkaartje per mail uitsturen maar blijkbaar heeft Google beslist om op kerstavond Gmail effe plat te leggen en halverwege kerstdag is het nog altijd niet opgelost.

Met email is het echter veel slechter gesteld. Wie ooit wel eens een email campagne heeft opgezet voor een klant of zichzelf weet ervan mee te spreken. Een plethora aan verschillende email readers van webbased email zoals Gmail en Hotmail over mobiele mail lezers op je PDA of Smartphone tot desktop applicaties als Outlook en Lotus notes maakt het voor de designer een hel om emails te ontwerpen die er in alle readers/clients hetzelfde uitzien. Zelfs een poging om emails iets of wat mooi op te maken en ze toch leesbaar te houden in alle email clients lijkt een utopie of je moet grote toegevingen doen.

Microsoft deed er onlangs nog een schepje bovenop door Outlook 2007 uit te rusten met de render engine van Microsoft word in plaats van de engine die Internet Explorer 7 aandrijft. Ik hoef je natuurlijk niet uit te leggen dat dit niet echt een vooruitgang is maar eerder een achteruitgang. David van Campaign Monitor stelt zelfs dat Microsoft email 5 jaar terug in de tijd heeft geflikkerd door deze keuze te maken.

Zeer frustrerend voor ontwikkelaars en designers die bezig zijn met email zoals ik wel vaker.

Maar er is licht aan het eind van de tunnel want bij Campaign monitor hadden ze er genoeg van en er werd prompt een pleidooi geschreven voor het respecteren van web standaarden in email. Een goede zaak, ik hoop alleen dat het niet weer zo een enorm werk van barmhartigheid gaat worden als het W3C wat in oktober 1994 werd opgericht en pas de laatste jaren echte resultaten boekte.

What’s the fuzz all about you’d say … well then I tried adding some javascript to the button and that too just saved to the to-do item and worked like one would expect. I added the following code as a to-do item and saved it, the result can be seen in the screenshot.

I honestly don’t know if this is a big security issue since i’m not a javascript security expert but if you ask me this is open for abuse. I would at least have expected some tags would get encoded into their HTML entities or javascript would get stripped all along. Anyone has an idea on this?

What’s in a name you say … well in this one there’s alot. Netvibes just got so so much better. They added tabbed pages, speeded up RSS feeds, added icons (Famfamfam icons rule) and hover captions for feed posts, you can now aggregate feeds requiring authentication which means you can add all kinds of info to your netvibes startpage. There is simply too much to tell about … just go check for yourself!

Netvibes just got a worthy alternative to Bloglines as my main feedreader with their Anise version.

After two days of searching and alternating words in my domainname i just decided that i’d reverse the process and name my website after the domainname I found. Here are some quoted numbers.

Do they really believe I can get to the top of google and the likes with this kind of junk? What kind of people are the idiots behind these companies? Spammers? Don’t think so since they have their phonenumber and address on their website. Talking about their website, it’s a complete soup of <font> <table> and <frame> tags, along with the nice but failed attempt to use definition lists for their forms. And the spelling isn’t that great either.

I just hope someone reads this and changes his mind on using these kind of companies for webmarketing, search for professionals instead, or at least someone who has read a book on SEO!

Little update, as of today 2nd of februari 2006 i can officially say that googling for marketing snake gives this very page as nr 1 result … and guess which comes in second? Marketingsnake, the professional SEO company. Duh! How’s that for free publicity marketingsnake?
