It’s saturday morning and i’ve just got off the train from Brussels and arrived at my mothers home. I spent the night in Brusselt at the BIFFF, which stands for Belgian International Festival of the Fantastic Film.
Me and my sister went to a special movienight where we got served 2 european premieres and 2 international premieres. We arrived at 22.30 friday evening and the last movie ended around 7.00 this morning. With the help of some hot coffee’s and Red Bull powerdrinks I managed to stay awake through all four the movies and it was worth it!
The Hills have Eyes
The first movie we got presented was “The Hills Have Eyes“, a remake of the 70s Wes Craven Cult classic by Alexandre Aja. Basically it’s a zombie movie but the acting, scenery and overall movie quality rise far above the average B-horror movie. I totally enjoyed this movie and so did the croud in the theatre judging from the applause afterwards. If you like some suspense horror and don’t mind alot of blood this is a must see, defenately one of the better horror movies i’ve seen in the last years.
Neighborhood Watch
Next up was one of the sickest movie’s i’ve seen lately, if not ever, Neighborhood Watch by Graeme Whifler. The story is thin, the characters shallow and the quality of the shooting isn’t top either, but that isn’t a prerequisite for this kind of B-movies. I didn’t enjoy the movie at all, although I could kind of appreciate the acting of Jack Houston who plays the terrorised neighbour Bob, but Pell James as his girlfriend wasn’t convincing at all. I didn’t even feel pity for her when Adrian gutted her in the finale of the movie. Overall a not-so-good movie with lots of pointless scenes which could have been to put to better use. If someone can tell me why the hottie at Bob’s office left a message at his computer but didn’t appear in the movie after that would clear up alot for me.
The Garden
Third in line, The Garden, a religious thriller by Don Michael Paul was pretty enjoyable although I found it too short in the end. The scenery was beautiful, the acting convincing but the story was only so-so. Samuel is this boy who receives visions of dead people with their mouth stitched shut and the Tree of Life as found in the bible. Through a stupid accident he and his father end up staying with Ben.Zachary, a loner who lives in what used to be the Garden of Eden. Basically Ben is the devil who wants Adam’s father to bite in the fruit of the Tree of Life so the Apocalypse can be reversed. I kinda enjoyed this movie although I wasn’t completely satisfied in the end. It had potential but ends up being nothing more than an average Omen/Sixth Sense copy. A good chance wasted if you ask me.
Night of the Living Dorks
The last movie was something you could call a German Teenage Zombie Parody. “The Night of the Living Dorks” is a movie which actually was a perfect ender for this night, although not really suited for the general horror or thriller fan but rather for teenagers looking for some nobrainer humour. The total movie was enjoyable but nothing i’d rent or pay for to go see in theatres. The only drawback here is that the movie is german spoken and since I don’t speak a word german I was obligated to read the subtitles which distracted me too much from the movie itself. Overall not too bad.
Final Thoughts
The experience of watching 4 movies in a row in a crowded theatre full of noisy horror fans was something i didn’t expect when i bought the tickets but one thing is sure, it was alot of fun and i’m going back next year!
And now … i … need … some … human flesh … oh no, errr … sleep.
